Work-Study
The College Work-Study Program enables students to work 15-20 hours per week on campus. It is a need-based program, and students qualify through the financial aid process and must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours. Students who qualify for the program work in various areas of the college as long as funds are available. Students who are unsure if they qualify for the Work-Study program may call the Work-Study Office at 708-456-0300, X-3155 or email the office at workstudy@smcun.com with any questions.
There are many benefits of a Student Employment Position. These include:
- You have the opportunity to earn money to help pay for your educational expenses.
- The Work-Study Office staff will try to match you with positions reflecting your major field of study, allowing you to potentially gain work experience in your field.
- Each supervisor realizes that you are a college student first. Typically your employer will try to be flexible by scheduling work hours around your class schedule.
- If you are employed under the Federal Work-Study Program, your earnings are not included on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the following year. Therefore, Work-Study income (although taxable) does not affect your future financial aid eligibility.
- Future employers are generally impressed with students who have job experience and have worked while attending school.
- Work-Study positions can build your resume and your supervisor may become an excellent reference.
